It is title of an article in the May 2012 issue of Better Homes and Gardens as well as the author describes the clever use of levels and partitions to create outdoor living and entertaining spaces as well as off-street parking for Sandy’s mini.

On Tour: Historic Garden Week Features Two 3north Residences

Considered one of the “world’s largest open houses,” Historic Garden Week in Virginia provides visitors a chance to see beautiful homes and gardens throughout the Commonwealth. Each year, 3north typically has had one to two homes on the tour. This year is no exception with two homes featuring design by 3north Principal Jay Hugo on Three Chopt Road and on Old Mill Road. Both homes are part of the Three Chopt/Westhampton tour in Richmond. More information may be found here.

Awards: 3north Receives Honors from AIA Richmond

3north received two honors at the AIA Richmond Honors and Awards Ceremony. Principal Sandy Bond’s design for Try-Me, a private gallery in Richmond’s Fan District, was one of three projects honored during the evening.

In addition, Associate Erin Webb, was the first recipient ever of the Richard L. Ford, FAIA Award, considered the Chapter’s highest award presented to a young architect, associate member, or intern. The award is made by the Chapter Board, based on nominations by the Honors Committee, to a young person who has demonstrated vision, passion, and excellence to the design community.

3north Projects Recognized on Travel and Leisure’s World Best Awards 2012

Once again, several 3north projects appeared among the Travel and Leisure’s World Best honorees: Sanderling Resort with a 3north designed spa and Bedford Springs Resort and Spa where 3north led the renovation with architectural design, interiors, landscape, furnishings and artwork. Finally, The Homestead where 3north has done extensive work over the years (and is working currently) was honored as well. 3north Principal David Rau led each of these projects.

3north Principals Elected to Area Non-Profit Boards

3north Principals Jay Hugo and Scott Ukrop were recently elected for terms of service on two boards here in Richmond. Jay is now serving on the board of Scenic Virginia, Inc., a private, non-profit organization that exists to preserve, protect, and enhance the scenic beauty of the Commonwealth. Scott now serves as a trustee for Historic Richmond Foundation whose mission is to preserve, promote, and protect the historic buildings and places of Richmond for the economic benefit and enrichment of the city.

Recognized: Capital Trees 14th Street Initiative

Scenic Virginia honored the Capital Trees initiative at the 2011 Scenic Awards Gala Reception and Ceremony at the Virginia State Capitol in October. 3north worked with members of the Boxwood, James River, Three Chopt and Tuckahoe Garden Clubs to create a plan on 14th Street in downtown Richmond to improve the streetscape aesthetically and to serve as a bio-filter to enhance the stormwater quality of the run-off into the James River and Chesapeake Bay.

Off the Press: Healthy Community Choices

A study of the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood around the Richmond Convention Center by 3north Principal David Rau was cited in a recent publication by the Southern Environmental Law Center, “Healthy Community Choices.” The City of Richmond hired 3north to make recommendations for the area around the convention center to make it more inviting at the street level and less imposing on the neighborhood.
