Process

In 2021, Kendal at Lexington, a continuing care retirement community, hired 3North and Biohabitats to create a master plan for land use and landscape for the campus in Lexington, Virginia. 3North led the effort while Biohabitats provided critical ecosystem and habitat knowledge to inform the master plan’s sustainability goals. Guided by 3North’s IQ process (Intangible Qualities), we collaborated with KaLex residents, staff, board members, and committee members to ensure that the master plan was informed by KaLex’s strategic plan, guiding principles for KaLex campus land use, other in-progress and ongoing planning initiatives, and KaLex’s residents and stakeholders. The results of the charrette were three design themes: finding inspiration in nature, celebrating a community with heart, and fostering a spirit of innovation.
