Process
The architectural design of a vacation retreat in Nova Scotia included its construction in heavy, seafaring materials to withstand headwinds on its remote coastal site. The design references the region’s indigenous building types – cottage, barn, and lighthouse — in its three-part plan and massing. Bedrooms and service areas are contained in the cottage end while kitchen and main living areas occupy the spacious barn-like mid-section; the lighthouse tower, a beacon on the shore, provides guest rooms with dramatic lookouts.
