Over the past decade, 3North has partnered with MARTIN* to transform its 118,000-square-foot headquarters in Richmond’s Shockoe Slip, evolving an outdated workplace into a dynamic, high-performance environment that reflects the agency’s creative culture.
Rather than relocating, the agency adopted a phased, “node-based” approach—strategically renovating key areas over time to improve flexibility, collaboration, and overall experience while maintaining daily operations.
A major intervention in 2019 reimagined the Atrium and Lobby as the social and cultural heart of the building. The Atrium now supports a range of work modes with glass-fronted conference rooms, flexible meeting spaces, and informal gathering areas, while a custom bar celebrates Richmond’s local identity. The Lobby was transformed into a gallery-like environment, replacing a traditional reception desk with a multi-functional communal table and integrating a large-scale video wall that showcases the agency’s work and cultural impact. Simplified architectural interventions allow local art, media, and craft to take center stage.
Most recently, the 3West renovation (2025), a LEED Gold-certified tenant upfit, converted a previously siloed office floor into a light-filled, flexible workplace. Full-height glass partitions draw daylight deep into the space, supporting transparency and connectivity, while new program elements, including a 150-person event space, dedicated presentation areas, and a wellness suite—expand the agency’s capacity for collaboration, client engagement, and employee well-being.
Through a decade-long partnership, 3North continues to reposition the workplace as an adaptable, future-forward environment, one that supports creativity, strengthens culture, and reinforces MARTIN*’s role as a leader in both industry and place.
